For over three decades, Jorge Jordan, APRN, has profoundly impacted the lives of young patients and their families at KIDZ Medical Services
, a multispecialty practice in South Florida dedicated to neonatal, pediatric, and women’s health. His dedication to providing life-changing medical care has earned him the title of Nurse of the Week, a recognition he truly deserves for his unwavering commitment and expertise.
Jordan plays a critical role in transporting severely ill patients to higher-level facilities, ensuring they receive the specialized care they need. He also takes pride in mentoring the next generation of nurse practitioners and physician assistants, ensuring his legacy of compassionate care continues.
Originally aspiring to become a doctor, Jordan’s path shifted after the tragic loss of his father at 16, which made medical school financially unfeasible. Instead, he enrolled in the Jackson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, where he gained invaluable experience in the NICU, pediatric ICU, emergency room, Cath Lab, SICU, and trauma center. “Whenever overtime was offered anywhere, I took it,” he reflects, highlighting the depth of his medical knowledge and experience.
Jordan’s journey led him to KIDZ Medical Services after he met neonatologists Dr. Albert Taño and Dr. Jorge E. Perez, who recognized his passion and encouraged him to pursue nurse practitioner training at Georgetown University. Today, he serves as the director of nurse practitioners and physician assistants at KIDZ, making history as the first NP to work in several community hospital NICUs.
“Dr. Taño and Dr. Perez had the foresight to bring nurse practitioners into community hospitals to provide much-needed coverage because there was a shortage of neonatologists,” Jordan explains. His pioneering spirit has paved the way for enhanced neonatal care in various hospitals across South Florida.
In addition to his leadership role, Jordan is involved in transporting critically ill infants from Level 1-2 facilities to Level 3 care, like South Miami Hospital. “It can get very complex; these are very sick babies that need a higher level of care,” he says, emphasizing the unpredictability of each case and the importance of experience.
Understanding the trauma that parents endure during these challenging times, Jordan prioritizes communication with families. “It’s very important to speak to the families to let them know what’s going on with their newborns—they often feel helpless, because the NICU is a whole new world,” he notes, striving to ensure parents feel supported and informed.
Throughout his remarkable career, Jordan has been involved in numerous milestone cases, including caring for the smallest baby born at Baptist Hospital at just 21 weeks and transporting a 22-week-old baby to South Miami Hospital for Level 3 care. “Both children are doing great; in fact, one just celebrated her quinceañera,” he shares with pride.
Jordan’s dedication extends to resuscitating a child born with no heartbeat to a drug-addicted mother, who was later adopted by a loving couple. “That couple had been trying to do IVF and adopt for years, and they were the happiest parents in the world,” he recalls. “I’m truly blessed to be a part of their lives.”
Passionate about sharing his knowledge, Jordan finds great satisfaction in training new PAs and nurse practitioners, contributing to the growth and success of KIDZ Medical Services. “KIDZ has grown significantly through the shared vision of Dr. Taño and Dr. Perez, who worked hard to make it what it is today. But despite the growth, it’s still like a big family,” he reflects. “I talk to them almost daily and can call anytime, day or night. They truly have the best interests of patients and KIDZ’ employees at heart. I am who I am because of them.”
Jorge Jordan’s unwavering dedication, experience, and nurturing spirit make him a deserving recipient of the Nurse of the Week honor. He inspires both his colleagues and the families he serves.
