The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is excited to announce the forthcoming launch of its new credential, Well-Being Excellence™. This innovative credential aims to assess and enhance the well-being programs within healthcare organizations and workplaces employing nurses. Leveraging an evidence-based framework, Well-Being Excellence™ evaluates the effectiveness of well-being initiatives and their contributions to improving the health and morale of nurses and diverse teams.
ANCC is recognized globally for setting the gold nursing and healthcare credentialing standard. Its rigorous programs establish benchmarks for excellence in practice, education, and organizational performance. With the Well-Being Excellence™ credential, organizations will have the opportunity to evaluate the cultural integration and effectiveness of their well-being programs and their impact on the work environment and interprofessional collaboration.
“Across many professions, industries, and workforces, employee burnout is at an all-time high,” stated Rebecca Graystone, PhD, MBA, RN, NE-BC, ANCC senior vice president of accreditation and organization credentialing. “This new credential emphasizes the critical role that effective well-being programs play in improving the overall health of the workforce, resulting in lowered turnover, increased engagement, and increased job satisfaction. Studies suggest well-being programs are one essential aspect of retaining employees while underscoring how these efforts improve the overall health of an organization.”

The healthcare sector is particularly vulnerable to high stress levels, leading to nationwide workforce shortages. A recent survey of over 7,000 nurses
revealed that 56% reported experiencing symptoms of burnout, with many lacking access to mental health support. Alarmingly, two-thirds of respondents indicated they had not utilized available mental health resources due to stigma. Other sectors are grappling with similar challenges, exacerbating workforce shortages nationwide.
As Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk, PhD, APRN-CNP, FAANP, FNAP, FAAN, vice president for health promotion and chief wellness officer for The Ohio State University, asserts, “The new ANCC credential is a wonderful mechanism to recognize hospitals and healthcare systems’ programs that are deeply committed to the health and well-being of their people.”
Organizations can begin applying for the Well-Being Excellence™ credential starting December 1, 2024. This marks an important opportunity for organizations employing nurses, both within and outside healthcare, to initiate transformative changes in workplace well-being. The potential impact of this credential is significant, offering hope for a healthier, more engaged workforce. The process begins with the ANCC Well-Being Self-Assessment, providing the tools needed to evaluate current programs and pinpoint areas for enhancement.
