Grace Carr, a resident of Allentown, Pennsylvania, embarked on her nursing journey at the age of 17 with a dream she had cherished since childhood. Wrapping her dolls in bandages and tending to them as a young girl, Carr knew from an early age that her path was in nursing. Fast forward 80 years, and at 97 years old, she remains dedicated to her calling, still serving at the St. Luke’s Sacred Heart Campus in Allentown.
Retiring from her nursing role at 62, Carr transitioned seamlessly into a volunteer position at the hospital. Every Wednesday, she assists patients with their tests, delivers flowers, and promptly ensures specimens reach the lab. Known for her perpetual smile and unwavering energy, Carr’s presence at the hospital is a source of joy for staff and patients.
Despite a brief hiatus during the pandemic’s peak, Carr’s volunteer dedication has amassed over 6,000 hours of service. Her love for people and good health fuel her commitment to helping others, a sentiment she echoes with gratitude and enthusiasm each week.
“From the time she shows up in the morning until she leaves in the afternoon, Grace always has the same happy smile,” said Beth Fogel, the hospital’s volunteer engagement specialist, who has known Carr for 20 years. “She never shows any weariness and always has the same pep in her step,” she says. “Everyone loves talking to her.”
Daily Nurse is thrilled to honor Grace Carr, an exceptional nurse, as our Nurse of the Week. Her remarkable dedication to nursing began at the age of 17 and has continued unwaveringly for an incredible 80 years. At 97 years young, her lifelong dedication to nursing is a testament to her unwavering commitment and serves as an inspiration to all.
Training as a nurse during World War II, Carr’s journey through the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps led her to Sacred Heart Hospital, where she honed her skills and passion for nursing. Carr’s influence in nursing is profound and enduring, from serving on the night shift for over two decades while raising a family to inspire her daughter and sisters to follow in her footsteps. Her service has left an indelible mark on the hospital and the community it serves.
With a legacy that spans generations, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren born at the hospital she serves, Carr’s unwavering commitment to her profession is a testament to her enduring spirit. As long as health permits, she vows to continue her service, a reflection of her profound gratitude for the hospital that has been a cornerstone of her life’s work.
